ALR Projector Screen

ALR (ambient light rejecting) screens help keep the picture bright and high in contrast when room lights are on. Choose UST ALR screens for ultra short throw and laser TV projectors, or long throw ALR screens for standard projectors, in fixed frame, floor rising and tab tension designs.

How to choose an ALR projector screen

An ALR (ambient light rejecting) screen is designed to reflect the projector's light towards the audience while reducing the effect of light coming from windows and room lamps. This helps the picture keep its contrast and colour in living rooms, offices and other spaces that are not fully dark. In a dedicated dark home cinema, a standard matte white or grey screen is often enough.

UST or long throw: match the screen to your projector

ALR screens are made for a specific projector position, so choose by projector type:

  • UST ALR screens are for ultra short throw and laser TV projectors placed on a cabinet just below the screen.
  • Long throw ALR screens are for standard projectors mounted on the ceiling or a shelf at the back of the room.

A UST ALR screen should not be paired with a long-throw projector (or the other way round), because the screen surface is built to accept light from one direction.

Screen formats

  • Fixed frame ALR screens: a permanently flat, tensioned surface on a wall-mounted frame, ideal for dedicated home theatres and living rooms.
  • Floor rising UST ALR screens: a motorised screen that rises from a floor cabinet when needed and hides away when not in use.
  • Tab tension ALR screens: motorised drop-down screens with side tensioning that keeps the ALR fabric flat.

Which size do you need?

Our ALR screens are available in 100", 110" and 120" (16:9). Use our projector screen size guide to compare width, height and recommended viewing distance for each size.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an ALR screen in a dark room?
Not usually. ALR screens give the biggest improvement where there is ambient light. For a fully dark room, a matte white or grey screen can be a better-value choice.

Can I use an ALR screen with any projector?
Choose the ALR type that matches your projector: UST ALR for ultra short throw projectors and long throw ALR for standard projectors.
